MM Lee. you have my support.
2006-04-14

the worst paper i've ever sat for in my entire life.

just happened yesterday at 930

i can only pray..

* * *

the recent reports on the elections and the interview with MM lee was interesting.
it was refreshing seeing him field questions from these young upstarts..but i thought that some of them were very rude and disrespectful, the way they spoke..

i personally hold MM lee in high regard..cos seriously, if you actually think about it, without him, singapore would most certaintly not be what she is today. i suppose we may have gotten this far, we may have become a strong southeast asian nation, a flourishing port, a global hub for everything, but not what we ARE.

it's what MM lee has done for the social and educational aspects that i admire him for. his foresight when he implemented two languages in schools..sure we complain no end about chinese being such a difficult and pointless subject to study..but now, even the americans and koreans are starting to learn mandarin chinese in schools. china is a huge country, and many of our ancestors hailed from there..holding on to our roots is important. for that same reason, malays learn malay and indians learn tamil or hindi..

and it's these bits of us that make us who we are and what we are..our country may proclaim racial harmony and isnt it evident? we ARE a harmonious nation albeit a small fraction of racists (haha i can list a few) but it's this racial tolerance that has been inculcated into us since our primary school social studies days that has made us able to accept people of other nationalities into our country, without really bearing a grudge against them. just look at how we placidly accept the fact that a huge percentage of our population consists of construction workers from bangladesh or thailand or china..

yea there have been grouses about china brides and prc scholars and foreign lecturers and all, and i wont deny that there have been plenty of racial slurs and jokes that have gone round, and even a considerable amount of people writing in to the forums complaining bout these people..but do we actually take any action against them? no! because we are a kind and considerate society that doesnt condone violence. (also partly because we are a very proud little group of people and lynching a foreign worker will probably result in you going to jail..and you wouldnt want that to happen because all your friends and relatives will see your face in the newspaper the next day and you will lose a lot of face) but yea. we talk. a lot. and stop somewhere there..NATO..no action, talk only. that basically sums up singaporean attitudes to life in general. hah. sad but true, and oh-so-effective.

we can all see what the government has been doing to keep its voters happy, and well, truth is we are happy (besides girls under the age of 21..who dont get any money bleah.) and we dont want that to change. the PAP has been keeping our country stable and relatively corruption-free ( i say relative cos i dont believe any government can be 100% corruption-free..but if you ask me to name a country which comes closest to it i'd patriotically say singapore!)..we have smart people up there keeping things in control..sometimes they make mistakes but who doesnt? and these mistakes have been kept relatively minimal over the years

it'll be a good idea if our opposition was stronger to keep the PAP on their toes..but look at it this way..if you were a bright young upstart that was supposed to choose between joining two companies, surely you'll choose the more recognised one where you'll have a greater chance of making your mark. goes the same for young politicians..unless they are really confident of themselves and that they'll be able to win the votes of the people, they will most definitely join the PAP..come on..even our prime minister is from the PAP..hah. and so are our SM and MM

teehee..PM MM SM..our PMS ministers and mentor..ahah

ok jokes aside..MM lee has done loads for our country and i respect him for that. asking him why he isnt stepping down and what more he can do for our county was seriously disrespectful and rude. are you going to ask your grandfather when he's going to stop coming for chinese new year celebrations? or family dinners? you'll get a slap across your face.

i believe there's plenty more MM lee can do for singapore.

he may be old, but look at how he neatly put ken kwek(or whatever his surname is) back in his place..his memory still serves him well and his rebuttal skills havent lost its edge. just his wealth of experiences are worth keeping him around for. who else knows as much about singapore since her independence days than the man who was integral to leading her to independence? he knows the insides and out of our country, and he knows about the countries around us. and i believe that keeping him out of politics will not only put us in a disadvantage..it'll probably kill him..it's what keep him up and running and what he sharpens his mind on. he is part of us..our past, our present, our future.

diss him about the PAP, question him about the government, shove the way the opposition has been treated in his face. perfectly fine, you'll probably never get this chance again. but asking him straight in his face why he's still around and basically telling him that he's not needed is out of hand and it downright pisses me off. and it saddens me that he had to endure that by a group of brash young motormouths that so cockily undermined his contributions and made such hurtful comments.

it just wasnt right.

singaporeans might have shed tears when wee khim wee, beloved president of many, passed away.

singapore will cry even harder when lee kwan yew goes.
